About the role
This role supports the facilitation of workshops as part of UMSU’s newest primary prevention program: The Masculinities Project. The Masculinities Project comprises a workshop program which aims to create space for University of Melbourne students to explore gender, identity, consent, and respectful relationships.
Peer Facilitators will undergo training to deliver content that supports participants—particularly those with lived experience navigating masculinity—to critically reflect on gender norms and promote healthier, more respectful expressions of masculinity.
Workshops encourage dialogue around emotional literacy, healthy relationships, accountability, and bystander action, with a strong focus on inclusivity, trauma-informed practice, and peer-led learning.
Core responsibilities of your role include:
Workshop Facilitation
- Deliver engaging and interactive workshops for students exploring themes around masculinity, consent, and respectful relationships.
- Use varied facilitation techniques (discussion, case studies, reflective activities, and multimedia) to build participant engagement.
- Support a respectful and inclusive environment that encourages critical thinking and emotional openness.
- Stay informed about topics related to gender, power, consent, and sexual harm prevention.
Participant Engagement and Feedback
- Encourage participation through meaningful group activities and discussion.
- Act as a respectful, reflective, and approachable guide—particularly for participants who may be exploring these topics for the first time.
- Collect and reflect on participant feedback to improve the project.
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding personal information shared in workshops.
Training and Development
- Attend mandatory training on trauma-informed facilitation, theories of masculinities, bystander response, and consent education.
- Participate in regular supervision and collaborative debriefing sessions with UMSU staff and fellow facilitators.
- Contribute ideas and feedback to help shape the ongoing direction of the project and its content.
Your Expertise (Need to Have)
- Lived experience navigating masculinity and gender socialisation, and a willingness to reflect on those experiences in a group setting.
- Passionate about promoting gender equity, respectful relationships, and reducing harm.
- Ability to engage a diverse range of students in respectful, reflective conversations.
- Comfort discussing sensitive topics such as gender norms, emotional wellbeing, consent, and identity.
- A strong sense of empathy, respect for lived experience, and awareness of trauma-informed practice.
Bonus Points (Nice to Have)
- Currently enrolled as a student at the University of Melbourne.;
- Previous experience in workshop facilitation, peer support, mentoring, or student leadership.
- Understanding of intersectional feminism, gender-based violence prevention, or bystander frameworks.
