Apollo Music Society is a music society at the University of Melbourne. We have a diverse range of ensembles open for anyone of all experience levels to join! From our humble beginnings as a small string orchestra, Apollo has flourished to become a well-established member of the cultural life at the University of Melbourne. Our membership includes students from all faculties, other tertiary institutions, and even alumni!

Since our inception in 2002, we have also seen the birth and growth of several ensembles! Our ensembles are:

  • Guitar Ensemble - An acoustic guitar band that plays a variety of songs from pop and fingerstyle to classical! Open to guitarists of all levels, beginners welcome!
  • Choir - Our classic choir. They perform a variety of songs including traditional, folk and musicals! Open to singers of all levels, beginners welcome!
  • Acapollo - Apollo's a capella group! They perform covers of anything that interests them (mostly pop songs). Open to singers of all levels, beginners welcome!
  • Rock Band - They're a chill group that likes to have fun and play all types of rock music. Spots are very limited, please follow and reach out on our socials for more information!
  • Fusion Stage Band - Not your average stage band! Our Fusion Stage Band accepts all different kinds of instruments, both standard and uncommon, so it's a fusion of instruments! Instrument level requirements will vary depending on the instrument, please reach out to us on our socials for more information!
  • Jazz Band - It's in their name! Jazz band loves to perform your classic jazz standards, with a focus on music that brings the soul alive! Instrument level requirements will vary depending on the instrument, please reach out to us on our socials for more information!
  • Strings Ensemble - If your instrument has strings, then Strings Ensemble will have you! They perform a variety of songs, most commonly classical and chamber music, and movie soundtrack medleys! Open to string players of all levels, beginners welcome!
  • Jam session - A casual jam session that we host for all of our members! If there isn't a space for you in our other ensembles, there will be a spot for you here to express yourself musically and to meet other like-minded people!

What do we do?

We at Apollo strive to pursue two main goals, as embodied in the namesake of our society: Apollo, the ancient Greek deity of Health and Music.

Music: Yes, as a music society we do indeed make music! We aim to unite students together in their musical interests, enhancing your university experience while also making good friends!

Health: Playing music is healthy, and using our musical talent we promote health through music, by means of (but not limited to) holding concerts and donating to health-related causes, and performing at hospitals and nursing homes.

As a society, we have a variety of social events through the year which include going out for a meal or drinks after rehearsals, social nights doing laser tag or bowling, but most memorably our biannual camps!

Club Aims:

  1. To unite students together in their musical interest and add to the diversity of student life.
  2. To promote great music and live music performances to enhance the university environment
  3. To use musical talent to promote health through music by holding charity concerts and donating to health related causes
  4. To travel to hospitals and nursing homes in metropolitan and rural Victoria to perform.
