Drug policy reform in Australia lags behind many parts of the world, and SSDP gives students an opportunity to engage in evidence-based education and advocacy to help bring about much needed change!

Students for Sensible Drug Policy is an international movement aiming to harness the voices of students and young people who are critical of our current prohibitionist drug policies. SSDP UniMelb is your local chapter at the University of Melbourne, working to connect students to the international and Australia-wide SSDP network, as well as to the growing Australian drug law reform movement. We aim to explore alternative, evidence-based approaches to drug prohibition, advocate for a greater focus on proven harm minimisation strategies, and provide a forum for students, staff and academics to engage critically with this controversial issue.

Club Aims:

  1. To provide the University campus community and greater Melbourne public with informative and educational information about current drug policy reform in Australia.
  2. To encourage recognition and critical analysis of the social threat posed by the war on drugs and to create a forum for discussion of alternative strategies.
  3. To foster understanding and discussion between drug users and non-users about the reality of drug use and abuse in society.
  4. To advocate for harm reduction strategies and education in both government and university health policy, as opposed to prohibition.
  5. To encourage critical review of University services and policies as they relate to drug use within the university community and society.
  6. To advocate for a further harm reduction approach in the provision of University support services.
  7. To provide academic support for students interested in the field.
