We have a judging panel who will be evaluating the outfits/costumes on the bases of creativity, sustainability, and innovation/experimentation!

Students from all faculties are encouraged to submit! No experience necessary!

Submission Guidelines:

* The biggest rule – no store-bought full costumes are allowed! Re-use! Re-cycle!

  • Your costume/outfit should be something that is homemade – you can make something from scratch or you could put together different pieces you already have. Sewing, stitching, knitting, hot glueing may not be necessary but you are more than welcome to if that’s your jam!
  • So you could put together a 70s look from what’s in your parents’ closet, but you can’t just wear a full 70’s look from the costume store! Reuse what you’ve got!
  • You will need to submit your costume/outfit in a short video (max. 15 seconds) that shows off your entire look.
  • Please begin and end the video with your hand covering the camera so that all the submissions blend together cohesively in the final compilation.
  • The video must be filmed in portrait mode and ideally in a well-lit area so that your costume/outfit can be fully appreciated!
  • Feel free to sashay, spin, smile, smoulder, and show off your best runway walk!
  • Please note that any sound in the video will be removed and replaced with music in the final compilation.
  • You can send in as many submissions as you want to!

If you have any questions at all, please email arts@union.unimelb.edu.au and we’d be happy to help out!

Know Your Rights Workshop!

The Music Students’ Society, UMSU Southbank and UMSU Creative Arts present a Know Your Rights workshop!
How do you know you’re being paid what you’re worth? How can you find out if you are being treated right in a creative workplace? What can you do if something goes wrong? What exactly does it mean to unionise a workplace in the arts? These questions and more are ready to be answered by representatives from prominent unions and peak arts bodies here in so-called “Australia.”
Speakers currently include representatives from the National Tertiary Education Union, APRA AMCOS, and the Media, Entertainment, and Arts Alliance.
Date: Wednesday, October 13th
Time: 2:30 – 4:30 PM AEST

The words 'Arts Collective' written in yellow letters on a coral background, with drawn figures of people being creative around it.

Creative Arts Collective

The CREATIVE ARTS COLLECTIVE provides a weekly meeting place for student artists, art appreciators and kind-of-want-to-try-art-casually-but-didn’t-know-where-to-go-ers to hang out, share tales of creative woe and triumph, find potential collaborators, embark on projects, and above all, get to know each other in a relaxed environment. What the collective does will be determined by the people who come.

Over the break and during semester, collective will now gather every Thursday from 4:00 – 5:00 PM AEST in a zoom call. Everyone interested is welcome to drop-in for as long or short a time as they want to meet fellow arty folk and work on their project while in the digital presence of others.

The CREATIVE ARTS COLLECTIVE is a non-binding agreement to listen and be heard, a place to find and respond to others’ art, to sometimes test your work, and is welcome to all students regardless of skill level, disciplines and interests.

This space will be facilitated by your very fun, very cool Creative Arts Officers, Vaishnavi (she/her) and Merryn (she/her). We’re here to make you feel welcomed and supported and we’ll come up with themes and inspo each week if you’re feeling a bit stuck on what to make and create. We look forward to seeing you there!

Our zoom collective can be joined from THIS LINK. You can also keep up-to-date on collective news by hitting interested on this Facebook event.

We’ll see you every Friday at 4:30 PM AEST for some crafts and chats at the link below!
