WinterFest Host Program 2019

Join a tour!

Congratulations and welcome to the University of Melbourne!  Our names are Ezra and Tim and we are the Directors of the University of Melbourne Student Union (UMSU)’s Host Program.

We’d like to extend you a special invitation to join a tour run by our program during WinterFest.  Our hosts – experienced students from across UniMelb’s faculties – will help you make some new friends and give you a guided tour of the campus.

Our main tours are run for undergraduate students.  These tours will depart from South Court, outside Union House – click here for a map.  Tours will depart at the following times:

  • Commerce: 10.00am
  • Science: 10.30am
  • Biomedicine: 11.00am
  • Design: 11.00am
  • Arts: 11.30am

If you are a student from another faculty, a postgraduate student, or get lost or arrive late on Carnival Day, never fear!  We’ll also have tours departing from the Volunteering Hub (V-Hive) on the ground floor of Union House throughout the day which you are welcome to join.  The tours will leave approximately every 30 minutes between 10.00am-2.00pm.

Please feel free to email us at hosts@union.unimelb.edu.au if you have any questions.  Otherwise, we look forward to welcoming you to the University of Melbourne!

“You see what we done here. By pledging our friendship. We made history.”

Cosy up this WinterFest for a screening of Matthew Warchus’ warming and rousing 2014 film ‘Pride’. On Thursday 25 July, in your favourite, my favourite, everybody’s favourite Rowdy Library. Kicks off at 4pm and there will be SNACKS.

It’s Summer 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power, and the National Union of Mineworkers are on strike. At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But the only problem is the Union seems too embarrassed to receive their support.

NOTE: this event is autonomous (for LGBTQIA+ students only thanx!)

Details of the event:

Date: Friday, 26th July 2019
Time: 10:00am – 3:30pm
Meet-up Point: Old Arts Theatre C

Location: Rowden White Library

GET YOUR SUIT ON

because it’s

UMSU!
QUEER’S!
(not so)
FANCY!
DINNER!
(at lunch)

We’ll be gathering together in the Private Dining Room and Ante Room (the fanciest and most exclusive rooms Union House has to offer) for the fanciest of aperitifs and drinks, with a fine selection of Woolworths gateaux au mud, crackers and dips, carrot sticks and hummus, and an exotic selection of fruits, as well as a suite of carbonated sugared beverages and long-life fruit nectars. The Queer Department will also make available an array of fairied breads.

This is a great chance to meet some LGBTQIA+ friends, get involved in the department, and get some free food. Bonus points if you come along in fancy dress! This event is a bit of a precursor to our weeky Lunch With The Queer Bunch, which happens at 1pm every Wednesday in the Queer Space, on Level 3 of Union House.

TO GET TO THE PRIVATE DINING AND ANTE ROOMS:
Access is via the stairs in North Court, next to the dumpling place, behind where the stage is for BBQs, Bands and Bevs, on the third floor, to your left.

Disability access is available via the lift to the right of “La Bonne Bouffe”, behind the kitchen doors, which will be available just for the event. When you get in the lift, press for Level 1, and it will be on your right.

More precise location details will be posted on Monday! Should you have any problems, you can always message the Queer Department page, ask Infodesk on Ground Floor of Union House, or hit up any of the volunteers wearing a purple Winterfest hoodie.

NOTE: this event is autonomous (for LGBTQIA+ students only thanx!)
