Animal Protection Society (UMAPS)

The University of Melbourne Animal Protection Society is a club dedicated to campaigning against animal cruelty at the University of Melbourne. If you care about animals and want to meet like-minded people or even just learn more about animal welfare, the Animal Protection Society is for you!

Some of our current activities include campaigning for eateries on campus to go “cage free”, establishing a policy of conscientious objection to animal use in teaching and assessment, leafleting, companion animal education and regular social dinners at Melbourne’s best vegetarian restaurants.

Club Aims:

  1. To encourage establishments on campus to adopt more ethical practices regarding animals and animal products.
  2. To provide continuing support to all establishments who choose to participate in this initiative.
  3. To educate students, staff and other members of the university community on animal cruelty issues.
  4. To create a legacy whereby the society will be handed down from student group to student group over the years, in the hope that there will continue to be a presence on campus campaigning for and advocating the interests of animals.
  5. To encourage the university to lead the way for other universities in adopting and advocating ethical and humane practices regarding animals.
