UMSU International: Co-Option Information

We are stoked to announce that UMSU International Co-Option 2021 has commenced! Come join and support the international student family while gaining valuable skills and experience in leadership, event/project management, teamwork and so much more!

What is Co-Option?

Co-Option is when our committee has interviews to hand-pick the best, the skilled and the brightest from a list of candidates. Because Co-Option is competitive, it is recommended that applicants have relevant experience to the role they are applying for. 

Co-option requirements:

  • All students of the University of Melbourne will be eligible to run for Co-Option.

Job Roles:

UMSU International Co-Opted Education Officer 

UMSU International Co-Opted Education Officer shall:

  1. Be a member of the UMSU International Education sub-committee; 
  2. Assist the UMSU International Vice-President (Education and Welfare) and UMSU International Education Director on issues and activities related to the education and rights of members in the University;
  3. Assist in the handling all general affairs of UMSU International; and
  4. Take up special assignments when so entrusted by the USMU International Central.

*Recommended skills:

  1. Be able to commit a minimum of 5 hours per week to assigned tasks;
  2. Have good communication skills and be able to work well with a team; and
  3. Be organised, friendly and open-minded.

 

UMSU International Co-Opted Welfare Officer 

UMSU International Co-Opted Welfare Officer shall:

  1. Be a member of the UMSU International Welfare sub-committee;
  2. Assist the UMSU International Vice-President (Education and Welfare) and UMSU International Welfare Director on issues and activities related to the welfare, wellbeing and rights of members;
  3. Assist in the handling of general affairs of UMSU International; and
  4. Take up special assignments when so entrusted by the UMSU International Central;

*Recommended Skills:

  1. Be able to commit a minimum of 5 hours per week to assigned tasks;
  2. Be able to be passionate and understanding others, with the ability to give support and comfort;
  3. Have good communications skills and be able to work well in a team;  
  4. Preferably be proficient in English and a second language; and 
  5. Be organised, friendly and open-minded.

 

UMSU International Co-Opted Cultural and Social Officer 

UMSU International Co-Opted Cultural and Social Officer shall:

  1. Be a member of the UMSU International Cultural and Social sub-committee;
  2. Assist the UMSU International Vice-President (Cultural and Social) and UMSU International Cultural and Social Director on issues and activities related to the cultural and social well-being of members in the University;
  3. Assist in the handling of general affairs of UMSU International; and
  4. Take up special assignments when so entrusted by the UMSU International Central.

*Recommended Skills:

  1. Be able to commit a minimum of 6 hours per week;
  2. Have good communication skills and be able to work well to assigned tasks in a team
  3. Be able to take a leadership role in a team, be open to ideas and criticism from fellow team members;
  4. Be confident and able to make proactive decisions under high pressure; and
  5. Be organised, friendly and open-minded.

 

UMSU International Co-Opted Media and Communications Officer 

UMSU International Co-Opted Media and Communication Officer shall:

  1. Be a member of the UMSU International Media and Communications sub-committee;
  2. Assist the UMSU International Vice-President (Media and Communications) and UMSU International Media and Communications Director on issues and activities related to the publicity of UMSU International;
  3. Assist in the handling of general affairs of UMSU International; and
  4. Take up special assignments when so entrusted by the UMSU International Central.

*Recommended Skills:

  1. Preferably have photo editing and graphic design skills;
  2. Preferably have video editing skills (not a must but desirable);
  3. Be able to commit a minimum of 4 hours per week to assigned tasks;
  4. Be able to work in a team, collaborate and be open to ideas and criticism; and
  5. Be organised, friendly and open-minded.

 

UMSU International Co-Opted Partnership & Sponsorship Officer 

UMSU International Co-Opted Partnership and Sponsorship Officer shall:

  1. Be a member of the UMSU International Partnership & Sponsorships sub-committee;
  2. Assist the UMSU International Partnership & Sponsorship Director on issues and activities related to liaison with both internal and external organisations relative to the university;
  3. Assist in the handling of general affairs of UMSU International; and
  4. Take up special assignments when so entrusted by the UMSU International Central.

*Recommended Skills:

  1. Have good communication and presentation skills;
  2. Can communicate well in the English language;
  3. Be able to commit a minimum of 5 hours per week to assigned tasks;
  4. Be able to take initiative, participate in teamwork and handle criticism; and
  5. Be organised, friendly and open-minded.

 

UMSU International Co-Opted Human Resources Officer 

UMSU International Co-Opted Human Resources Officer shall:

  1. Be a member of the UMSU International Human Resources sub-committee;
  2. Assist the UMSU International Human Resources Director in affairs related to the International Student Ambassador (ISA) Program and improving or maintaining relationships between members of UMSU International Central;
  3. Assist in the handling of general affairs of UMSU International; and
  4. Take up special assignments when so entrusted by the UMSU International Central. 

*Recommended Skills:

  1. Know or have a level of understanding of the International Student Ambassador Program;
  2. Be able to commit a minimum of 5 hours per week;
  3. Have good communication skills and be able to work well to assigned tasks in a team;
  4. Be able to make rational decisions without bias or favouritism;
  5. Be able to feel comfortable and talk to new people; and
  6. Be organised, friendly and open-minded.

* Recommended skills are not compulsory, however, could be helpful for a smooth transition and suitability for the job.
