Myriad Magazine Applications
ABOUT MYRIAD
Myriad is an autonomous magazine for and by people of colour. It is the People of Colour Department's publication. The magazine is created by University of Melbourne students of African, Aboriginal, Indigenous, Pacific Islander, Asian, Latinx, Arab, multiracial and other relevant backgrounds. We aim to create a space for BIPOC students in media creation to be part of the editorial team or as a contributor! We accept various works of art and written pieces. We look forward to launching Edition 7 of the magazine this year, and having all your wonderful pieces in it.
ABOUT THE ROLES
Editors
Editors are responsible for managing the content and design of the magazine and set the direction of the magazine with the help of the People of Colour Department. You should be able to generate ideas for stories and discuss the same with the Content Writers.
Myriad is recruiting 4 editors:
- A Creative/Non-Fiction Editor
- A Commentary Editor
- Two Graphics Editors
General responsibilities of all the editors will include:
- Reviewing and approving magazine content and design
- Overseeing the content and graphic layout of the magazine
- Brainstorming themes and content list for the magazine
- Working with authors on developing their submissions before final print
- Drafting photo captions and headlines/subheadlines for the section
- Editors are responsible of social media posting on Myriad’s social platforms
- This includes creating a promo plan to launch Myriad
- All editors are expected to dedicate at least 6 hours per week to work on the magazine
- The role commences from the 26th of June to commence the intial planning

Creative Editor
Role Requirements: |
- Edit creative pieces, including but not limited to plays, stories, short fiction, and poems
- Develop ideas for articles and features
- Ensuring that all creative pieces comply with Myriad’s core values

Renumeration:

Commentary/Non-Fiction Editor
Role Requirements: |
- Edit creative pieces, including but not limited to plays, stories, short fiction, and poems
- Develop ideas for articles and features
- Ensuring that all commentary pieces comply with Myriad’s core values

Renumeration:

Graphics Editor
Role Requirements: |
- Create graphics for each written piece of submitted work in-line with the work and/or theme
- Ensure a coherent design for the magazine
- Ensuring that all visual pieces comply with Myriad’s core values
- Must be proficient with and have access to Indesign, Adobe Design or any relevant magazine editing software

Sub-Editors
We are looking for 18 sub-editors. 6 sub-editors per editorial team.
Subeditors will work with editors to refine content before it is published in the magazine. Your responsibility will include ensuring the correct grammar, spelling of the work published.
General Role Requirements: |
- Working with the editors on the magazine
- Ensuring that stories are the right length and correctly placed on pages
- Sizing photographs and placing them within features
- Working with authors on developing their submissions before final print
- Conducting a first edit on all stories for the section that is relevant
- Ensuring that all deadlines are met by contributors
- All subeditors are expected to dedicate at least 3 hours per week to work on the magazine with the editors

HOW TO APPLY
Applications for all roles close at 9am on the 23rd of May.
For Editors, please fill in the form and include a Cover Letter, CV and 3-4 pieces of previous work.
For Sub-Editor applications, please submit your CV and 1-2 pieces of previous work along with your application.
If you're planning on applying to both Editor and Sub-Editor positions, please include a Cover Letter, CV and 3-4 pieces of previous work.
Please note that all applicants must:
- Be a student at the University of Melbourne,
- Must identify as a person of colour
- Have working rights in Australia (inc. student visa),
- Be able to provide an invoice for work done,
- Have a superannuation account
