It’s week 7 of semester two – just when you thought you’d get a midsem break, you realise it’s not for another three weeks…

Fear not! The inaugural UMSU PoC Mental Health Week is on! We’ve got some amazing events lined up every day this week (Sep/9-13) – come connect, unwind and take a well-earned break.

PoC Mental Health: A Facilitated Discussion

Join us for a facilitated discussion where we’ll be talking about the intersectionalities of being a person of colour and mental health. We’ll be discussing these intersectionalities as well as how we can work around the gaps that exist in the mental health sector for people of colour through coping strategies, the services available, and offering one another peer support.

This will be facilitated by Niharika Hiremath, a National Mental Health Commissioner. This event is autonomous.

Mental Health Week: Hasan Minhaj Homecoming King Screening

We’re tying our fortnightly film screenings into Mental Health Week with some comedy! Claimed by many as the “best stand-up comedy special” on Netflix, Hasan Minhaj’s Homecoming King is bound to make you laugh at least once. For all of you with strong feelings about Hasan Minhaj (good or bad), check out Thursday’s event.

This event is autonomous.

Anti-Racism Workshop: Discrimination and Mental Health

As part of PoC Mental Health Week, Srishti Chatterjee will be presenting a workshop on the mental health repercussions of discrimination. Every PoC student experiences daily discrimination at Uni, along with additional feelings of impostor syndrome and inadequacy, which translate into real physiological and psychological disorders in many people. She hopes to help people recognise these symptoms in themselves and others around them.

This event is NOT autonomous.

Social Collective

It’s our loved weekly social collective but with a lil something extra! Skincare!! (+a carefully curated playlist). Come decolonise and moisturise with us again! We’ll have food, music, and lots of skin pampering.

This event is autonomous.

Roundtable Discussion: Hasan Minhaj Homecoming King

Join us for a roundtable discussion on Hasan Minhaj’s Homecoming King facilitated by Danushi Rajapakse. Danushi will be discussing the cathartic power of comedy and story-telling as well as mental health in immigrant communities. We’ll be posting links to some readings soon so watch this space! Light snacks will be provided.

This event is autonomous.

Anti-Racism Workshop: One of a Different Kind

“One of A Different Kind” is Akshata Kulkarni’s take on casual racism, where she will explore everyday racism, stories and experiences. This will be an interactive workshop so come along and share your own stories.

This event is not autonomous

We hope to see you at these events! Please also feel free to use our Facebook frame 🙂

The UMSU People of Colour Department acknowledge that PoC Mental Health Week is taking place on the land of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present, and future and acknowledge that this land was stolen and sovereignty was never ceded.
