This subject offers a fantastic overview of the esoteric dimension of Islam. Dr Kamal is the lecturer and tutor for the subject. He is the perfect person to teach you about Sufism, as his area of research deals with Muslim philosophy, Suhrawardi and Mulla Sadra. The subject focuses on the epistemological and ontological arguments of prominent Sufi thinkers. The subject also places an emphasis on the historical context in which ascetic and antinomian practises emerged in. Lectures are not recorded, so it is highly recommended you attend them. The tutorials involved discussing different Sufi movements and analysing primary texts by key philosophers. The questions/statements we had to select to write on for our final assessment (2000 word essay) was a tad difficult, but if you are organised and complete all research on time, you will have no problems. This subject is important to undertake for anyone majoring in Islamic Studies.
