An awesome elective subject for both Anthropology and Linguistics majors. The content is really interesting, however the assessments can be quite challenging and time consuming - incl. a major research project which is like writing a mini thesis. Some aspects of the course may be daunting at first if you're not a linguistics major, however this isn't really something to be concerned about as you will learn what you need to throughout
This subject is quite dense and challenging. The final piece of assessment is only 2500 words but requires hours of interviews and transcriptions before you even get to the research and writing component. Whilst a lot of the content is interesting, it definitely felt like it moved too fast for the majority of the people in the class. I wouldn't recommend to non-linguistics majors or anyone who doesn't have the time to commit to such extensive assessment.
The most time consuming subject ever! If you are super interested in linguistics, and have buckets of time to spend, then this would be a great subject for you! The content was interesting, and the lectures overall were engaging, but the content is super hard, especially if you are not a linguistics major. I took this as an anthropology major and it took me double the time of any of my other subjects, due to the amount of prior assumed knowledge. Barb (lecturer/sub co-ordinator) is super knowledgable, but I think that can mean that the subject level can be too high for a second year.
