Disappointing subject overall. It is very history orientated so do not take it unless you are down for a lot of not so recent history. The philosophy focuses on the Plato and Aristotle so again unless you are into the idea of a soul not the subject for you. It does however, end really well with Cordelia Fine who covers the psychological side of thinking, but this isn't enough to redeem the subject if you aren't into the history/ancient philosophy side.

As Reason is an Arts Foundation Subject, don't expect to gain too much from it. Although the lectures in the first 2 or 3 weeks were quite interesting and I found learning about classical philosophy to be enjoyable, the lectures went downhill after the first few weeks, with attendance dwindling rather dramatically to the point where the lecturers started complaining about the empty lecture theatre. You certainly won't miss much if you just watch the lectures at home... Additionally, watching them at home means you can skip through the useless ravings of the lecturer on any given day - some lectures involved a full half hour of the lecturer talking about how fewer and fewer people were coming to lectures, whether lecture attendance should be made compulsory, etc., etc...... before finally getting to 20 minutes of actual content. My tutes were absolutely pointless - we never did anything useful, and the tutor was not only incredibly dull, but he also insisted on only discussing his own views on any given topic - which meant discussions were always incredibly one-sided, unfortunately. Something that was annoying was that there were usually quite a few very long readings assigned to each week, but we were never given a chance to discuss them, and mostly they were useless when it came to using them in assessments. Most people stopped doing the readings after a couple of weeks and still got an H1 in each assignment using strictly their own research. Assessments are fairly straightforward - as long as you do some research you'll find it fairly easy to do well. Ultimately, all Arts students have to do a Foundation Subject, and none of them are perfect, so don't expect too much from them.
