"Red Rose, White Rose" portrays the emotional entanglements between the protagonist Tong Zhenbao and two women. Wang Jiaorui, known as the "Red Rose", was his mistress, while his wife, Meng Yanli, was the "White Rose". They both compromised in their love for him, but Tong Zhenbao loved himself more than anyone else, ultimately causing them all to suffer. The three were trapped in the prison of love, which denied them a happy ending.

The social and intellectual state of China was also gradually being influenced by external ideas, leading to new and merging schools of thought. However, many unfair and incomplete ideas about women still existed. This play reproduces the dilemma of women's lives in a patriarchal society and reveals the root cause of the tragedy.
