It’s that time of year again! UMSU election season, when the stupol (student politics) hacks are out in force. Potentially you’ve even had a friend or two change their profile pic to include a tacky ‘vote for us’ frame.

Unlike some, we’re not going to tell you how you should vote, but in the interest of raising awareness about how university politics and politics in general can work, and can also go horribly wrong, on Monday September 6, the same day 2021 voting commences, we’ll be screening journalist Gary Newman’s doco The State of the Union (2003)!

Clocking in at 63 minutes, it’s not a long watch, and might be the most riveting thing you see all year, documenting the infamous 2003 ‘Melbourne University Student Union’ (MUSU) elections. With allegations of corruption and all-out war between the campus’ left and right-wing factions, the future of the union was at stake…

If you’re missing campus, this one may hit the spot too, with plenty of familiar Parkville sights! To watch it with us, text chat while doing so, and hang on Zoom after, just head to https://cytu.be/r/Film_Society at 7:30 pm on the night!
