Given the recent turbulent events and international interest in Afghanistan, for week 6 we’ll be watching an Afghan movie, the first feature to be fully shot in the country since the Taliban banned movie production and photography in it from 1996 until 2001: Osama (2003)!
Written and directed by Siddiq Barmak and winning Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globes, it tells the story of a girl forced to masquerade as a boy so she can support her mother and grandmother under Taliban rule and the restriction of women in public.
To watch it with us, just head to our usual online stream at https://cytu.be/r/Film_Society on the night. You can text chat while watching, and we’ll hop on to Zoom to talk once the 83-minute film’s done.
