The PoC Department’s second Anti-Racism Workshop for Semester 2 will be Amal Wehbe’s ‘More Than A Token’.

As a hijabi, Amal’s cultural/religious background is easily identifiable. She aims to discuss her experience with this in relation to tokenism, whereby as an individual, your culture as a whole is used to elevate certain groups/organisations without any real meaning and a disregard for your own agency. She will discuss the different ways this can play out and how People of Colour can navigate the situation and how non-PoC can keep themselves in check.

Amal is a BA student majoring in Politics and International Studies and Media and Communication. She hopes to allow others and herself to reflect on their personal experiences by invoking meaningful conversations.

*This event will be catered and is non-autonomous. White allies are encouraged to attend.
