A World in Crisis: the Yellow Vests and the fight against neoliberalism
The French Yellow Vest protests are in their 14th week. They started against President Emanuel Macron’s attempts to introduce a fuel tax. Having won that, the movement’s demands have now broadened to include the minimum wage, tax justice and public services. This month the stakes were raised again when the movement linked up with rank-and-file-led strikes in France’s major union federations and school and university unions.
A general strike could finish off Macron and his deeply unpopular bankers’ government.
There is much for us to learn from the successes and missteps of the Yellow Vests in the fight against neoliberal capitalism and the brutal austerity measures that have swept Europe since the Global Financial Crisis.
