The Switch – A Short Film Premiere

Come and join the cast of The Switch as they debut their short film!

In a world where “pandemic pandemonium” infiltrates every part of our lives, a resolution to the confinements of negative thinking created by new, unprecedented, restricting social changes, was born.

Xanthe Beesley, Union House Theatre Artistic Director in collaboration with multidisciplinary artist Roshelle Fong and theatre artist Suzie J. Jarmain invited a select ensemble of uniquely passionate and courageous students to become a part of a twelve-week online project called The Switch.

The Switch is a multidisciplinary project examining the question, “how do we switch off from pressures and switch onto creativity?” New relationships formed across a cyber-landscape as we carefully and creatively plugged into themes of new anxieties and pressures existing in a world of study where COVID is dominant and its impacts of isolation and uncertainty are prevalent.

Over twelve weekly sessions, The Switch ensemble found their inner superheroes, made a pop music film clip, created dramatic and comedic relationships in a digital galaxy where face filters, and video glitch filters present the possibility of being who you want to be. They learnt professional acting, theatre-making, movement, and digital storytelling skills.

Our short film is a mini-collage of creative work produced using these skills alongside improvisation, musical provocations, mythologies, lived experiences, to challenge how we use masks to hide and to express ourselves in times such as these. The main focus of The Switch was to investigate how creative play could ignite our ensemble to switch off from anxieties and switch onto thinking in an imaginative, inspiring, powerfully liberating way.
