Residential Program

To accommodate rural and regional students in Victoria, VCE Summer School runs a supplementary residential program. The residential program allows students to board on campus at St Hilda’s College, for the duration of the two week program. Up to 80 students can be accommodated in 2018, with good quality meals provided (typical meals include chicken parmigiana with roast vegetables and fruit salad or lasange with salad and chocolate ripple cake). Each student receives a private room with a wardrobe and study desk. Students can be accommodated over the middle weekend at an additional cost if necessary.

Furthermore, the residential program is a structured, two-week activities program. A team of eight residential tutors and four directors will supervise the students and all activities for the two weeks. Students will be divided into groups of around ten and supervised by one of the residential tutors for the duration of the program. The residential activities program is designed to give students a taste of college life, as well as the opportunity to explore the city of Melbourne. Activities and excursions that have run in the past include a visit to the Queen Victoria Night Market an Amazing Race around the CBD, Muggle Quidditch, and an excursion to Lygon Street to sample gelati. Please note that attendance at all activities is compulsory. Activities will also be run over the middle weekend, subject to the interests of those staying on campus.

“The residential programme was perhaps one of the best experiences of my life! The incredible work demonstrated by the multitude of tutors was simply amazing. The programme as a whole was simply wonderful.” – 2016 Resi Student

Please get your applications in early! We can only accept 70 students and we generally only accept three students per school. The Residential Program is only available to students in rural or regional Victoria outside of metropolitan Melbourne and as such preference is given to students based on geographical need. As as places on the Residential program are limited, you’ll need to provide a few extra documents in order to apply for a position. You’ll need to supply:

  • A letter of recommendation from your school (200-300 words) OR a letter of recommendation from a member of your local community (200-300 words).
  • A personal statement outlining why you’d like to attend and what you’re looking to get out of the program (300 words).

If you are unsure if you qualify for the Residential Program, or if you have any further queries, please contact the VCESS office by emailing the Directors at summerschool@union.unimelb.edu.au.
