Become a mentor
Want to become more involved in university life? Thinking about enhancing much-needed skills for your future career? Want to expand your network and meet like-minded peers?
The UMSU Mentoring Network is the perfect program for you! It doesn’t matter if you are an undergraduate or post graduate student, a domestic or international student, we want to give every student the opportunity to take initiative and involve themselves in university culture.
This is an amazing opportunity to develop skills and qualities which are valued by employers and will be useful for your future. As a mentor and leader, you will gain lasting friendships and learn things about yourself which allow for improvement and positive change.
gain work experience and leadership skills
build your confidence and sense of self-development
incorporate volunteering into your university experience
network with peers in similar majors/disciplines
improve your knowledge about uni services and resources through the training we provide
throughout the semester there are many events eg. Coffee catch ups, amazing race and trivia nights
Upon entering the university, students often feel anxious and worried about settling into a new environment. By volunteering as a mentor, you can:
- give advice based on your own experiences
- suggest to your mentee how they can make the most of uni life
- refer your mentee to university services and resources which can support them
- develop a friendship
You are not there to provide your mentee with academic help (as you are not an academic tutor).
We will aim to pair mentees with suitable mentors that study the same or similar major or discipline (subject to the number of applicants) before the semester starts.
