Welcome to UMSU 2015

Hi there!

I’m Rachel Withers, President of the University of Melbourne Student Union (UMSU), and I want to personally welcome you (or welcome you back) on behalf of the Student Union. I hope you’ve enjoyed the first two sunny weeks of 2015 at the number one university in the country.

Whether you are a first year who’s got lost for the sixth time today, a third year who’s happened to miss O-Week every year or you’ve just stepped off the plane to study in Melbourne, I want you to know that we’re here for you.

UMSU is separate from the university, and is run by students just like you. It represents every student at the University of Melbourne, be they undergrad or postgrad, local or international, conscious of this fact or completely oblivious to it. There’s no need to join up: if you’re going to (or skipping) lectures, you’re already a part of it.

That said, to take full advantage of everything we have to offer, you should jump on our mailing list and keep an eye on our website for upcoming events on campus. On this website, you will find many different services to assist and support you – and they are all free for you. There’s never any reason to struggle with issues alone here.

UMSU really can make your time at uni special. In just four years, I’ve:

  • Made hundreds of friends at UMSU events
  • Eaten countless free UMSU breakfasts, lunches and dinners
  • Packed out my résumé with leadership roles and accomplishments I can talk about in interviews
  • Been introduced to mentors who are already succeeding in their fields
  • Learnt teamwork and leadership skills far beyond what group projects could teach me

They’ve been the best few years of my life so far.

If you’ve already joined one of our 200+ affiliated clubs, eaten at a free BBQ, picked up a copy of Farrago or asked for help from the Info Desk in Union House or the Spot, then you’ve had a taste of what the Student Union is all about. If you haven’t, there’s still plenty of time: why not come to one of our events, host your very own radio show (new in 2015!), or you could join us at the National Day of Action on higher education.

And that’s just a small selection of what’s on offer — look around this website to see the rest.

So remember:

And lastly, get excited. Your time at university can be filled with wonderful activities, friendships and achievements both inside and outside the classroom – don’t let your degree be the only thing you leave here with.*

My office door on Level 1 of Union House is always open to you if you’d like to chat about anything at all!

Rachel Withers
