PUNKIFICATION!!! explores gender and the gender binary, and uncovers the importance of hair in gender performance. The film depicts a queer journey of self-discovery represented through hair, by pushing the boundaries of boldness until there are no boundaries left to push. It aims to tackle the conceived and performative notion of femininity and how much of how you are perceived as being female is encapsulated within one’s hair – and how cutting it short, shaving it, or otherwise altering one’s appearance is a complete and radical subversion of expected femininity. The mohawk is a radical haircut and inspired by the aesthetics of the Riot grrrl movement, which inspired my current feminist and gender political ideas.
