Nora Directors Notes: Xanthe Beesley
In 2022 Union House Theatre will present ‘Nora: A Doll’s House’ by Glaswegian playwright Stef Smith. This adaptation sets the story of A Doll’s House across three time periods – 1918, 1968 and 2018 which provides a great provocation for the design team. For example, our Set Designer must create a playing space that can hold these different periods whist being responsive to fleeting changes between the years, that exist with a line or a moment. The Costume Designer needs to create clever base costumes which can be layered to be suggestive of various character or eras. Lighting and sound will create atmosphere and combine to unify the piece, whilst still having distinct functions around the rhythmic and emotional landscape of Nora. In this production we’re all looking forward to working collaboratively, testing out design ideas in the rehearsal room well before the production week.
These sketches are my way of beginning to communicate set ideas to the design team. Sometimes the most basic scribble can be extremely helpful!
