Who can use the Rowden White Library?
It’s free for all University of Melbourne students and staff to borrow from the Library. You must have a valid student or staff card with you in order to borrow.
Non University of Melbourne students and staff can borrow from the Library by joining the Friends of the Rowden White Library. An annual fee applies, you will need to fill in a form & supply 2 passport sized photos of your face 🙂
How many items can I borrow and for how long?
You may borrow 10 items in total and place holds on up to 10 items at a time. The loan period for books is 3 weeks and 1 week for DVDs, CDs magazines. The vinyl is not for loan.
Additionally, you can borrow up to 10 e-books for a period of 3 weeks each.
Returning borrowed items
All items taken out of the Rowden White Library must be returned to the Library by the due date via the return chutes. As a borrower it is your responsibility to note the date that borrowed items are due for return. The due date is stamped on the date slip at the time of checkout.
There are two return chutes: one is located to the right of the loans desk; and the after-hours chute is to the left of the main entry/exit doors.
Please do not return Rowden White Library items to other libraries of the University of Melbourne. The Rowden White Library is a service of UMSU and has no administrative relationship with other university libraries. The return of Rowden White Library items remains the sole responsibility of the borrower at all times.
You can check your current borrowing record on the library’s online catalogue.
You may re-borrow items in person at the Loans Desk, at the “My Account” tab online, or by phone, on (03) 8344 6967. In either case, please have your valid student/staff card with you so that we may use the barcode to access your borrowing record.
Items may only be renewed twice. Items that are a few days overdue will still be renewed. However, if another patron has placed a hold on any item you have borrowed, we will be unable to renew that item, and you will need to return it to the library by the due date. Items that have incurred lost charges cannot be renewed under any circumstances.
Online renewals must be done before the due date. If you find that you are unable to renew online please come and see us at the Loans Desk or talk to us on the phone. When renewing online, your login is the 14-digit number at the bottom of your student/staff card. Your password is the one you chose when you registered at the library.
Loans are not transferable
No one else can use your card to borrow on your behalf, and you cannot give items you have borrowed to anyone else to use. If this occurs the loan will be withdrawn.
Overdue items and fines
Overdue notices are sent as a courtesy only. Failure to receive a reminder notice does not excuse you from the responsibility of returning items on or before the due date, so please ensure we have your correct postal and email address. You cannot borrow until all overdue items are returned or replacement charges paid.
Until all overdue materials are returned and all outstanding charges paid, course results are withheld, and it is not possible to enrol, re-enrol or graduate.
If the items are returned or paid for, all fees and charges will be waived, and all rights restored.
If you have any queries please call the library on (03) 8344 6967 or email the Library Coordinator.
