Defend Our Staff and Education Rally

The millionaire executives who run The University of Melbourne are pushing through the largest cuts to staff and students seen in half a decade.

Already last year over 800 university staff were sacked, workloads were increased, and subjects were cut and under-resourced. Now, despite millions in surplus and billions in investments and reserves, the University is pushing ahead with Phase 2 of its ‘Pandemic Reset Program’.

This will see more staff and budget cuts – leading to overworked and underpaid staff, crowded tutorials and reductions in student services. Already, two of the main student services teams are being sacked, leaving staff without their livelihoods and removing vital services from vulnerable students.

In light of this, we are calling on students to come out in protest against the University. Staff and students should not have their livelihoods and education ruined for the University’s pursuit of profits.

As students, we need to stand in solidarity with our tutors, lecturers, and administration staff. Come along to the next protest on Thursday April 27, to demand the University stop these outrageous attacks on staff and students. Meet at South Lawns at 1pm.
