Australian Indigenous Studies

Australian Indigenous Studies is the study of Indigenous culture from a wide range of different perspectives ranging from sociology, politics, history, and cultural studies.  Many of the subjects which are covered in the major can be incorporated into other majors including history and linguistics. It is one of the more challenging areas of study and includes a lot of confronting material. Another area which people might find interesting is the Language in Aboriginal Australia (LING20009) subject taught by Rachel Nordlinger which can be taken as part of linguistics or Indigenous Studies major or even just as breadth.  It is described as well taught with a very good overview of what is a huge subject area.  It involves actually going to the Northern Territory where you spend a few weeks learning Murrinh-Patha, a language spoken in Wadeye.
