Society for Astronomy at Melbourne University (SAMU)

The Society for Astronomy at Melbourne University (SAMU) is a vibrant student organization dedicated to fostering a passion for astronomy among its members.

The society explores astronomy beyond the science, focusing on its cultural, historical, and human significance. From ancient sky stories and navigation to modern interpretations of the cosmos, we examine how different people have understood and connected with the night sky across time, space and academic fields. Through discussions, events, and collaborative projects, we create a welcoming space to share ideas, reflect on astronomy’s place in society, and engage with the universe in a more meaningful, human way.

Club Aims:

  • Explore the cultural and historical significance of astronomy
  • Create opportunities to learn about space from diverse perspectives
  • Foster a social, inclusive community
  • Run events that connect astronomy with culture, history, and shared experience
