Myriad Editor Positions – Expressions of Interest

Myriad is the People of Colour Department’s annual publication. The magazine is created by University of Melbourne students of African, Asian, Pacific Islander, Aboriginal, Indigenous, Latinx, Arab, multiracial, and other relevant backgrounds.

The UMSU POC Department is seeking expressions of interest for three paid student contractors to be the editors of the 2020 Edition of Myriad. We are seeking a Commentary/Non-Fiction Editor, Graphics Editor and Creative Editor to edit the magazine over the period of Late August to November. Successful applicants will be contracted for $500 at the conclusion of the work done. Please find below the responsibilities of the individual editors. 

Please note the applicants must:

  • Be a student at the University of Melbourne,
  • Have working rights in Australia,
  • Be able to provide an invoice for work done,
  • Have a superannuation account
  • Have their own equipment and software,
  • Have a passion for POC visibility, advocacy and representation.

Applications should be in the form of an Expression of Interest, with the subject line “Myriad Editor EOI 2020” and include:

  • Which position(s) you are expressing interest for,
  • A cover letter detailing your skills and experience,
  • 2-3 pieces of work you would like to showcase in your application.

Editor team shared responsibilities

  • Contribute to the vision and direction of the magazine,
  • Attend Myriad Collectives,
  • Consistent communication with co-editors regarding shared workload

Graphics Editor responsibilities

  • Coordination of a team of graphics sub-editors
  • Proficiency with InDesign or other publishing software preferred but not required
  • Coordination of creating graphics for promotion of magazine
  • Collation and formatting graphics and written submissions for a cohesive final publication

Commentary Editor responsibilities

  • Coordination of a team of commentary sub-editors
  • Contribute and direct the sub-editing of commentary/non-fiction submissions
  • Communicate with sub-editors and writers regarding editing their work

Creative Editor responsibilities.

  • Coordination of a team of commentary sub-editors
  • Contribute and direct the sub-editing of creative submissions
  • Communicate with sub-editors and writers regarding editing their work

*Note: Successful applicants will be shortlisted for a 15 minute interview.
