Filmmakers Collaborative

We are running a workshop about all things production, and we have some special guests this week!

Filmmaking involves handling a large volume of concurrent tasks. Often the pre-production stage is the most tedious yet least discussed part of making a film, and a solid pre-production workflow and timeline can save you from many headaches on set and ensure you bring across your vision onto screen in the most spectacular way imaginable.

Join us this Friday for a Filmmaker Showcase featuring former UMFC members and presently active filmmakers Justin Villar and Jeremy Teh! 🔥 Dive into production timelines with short film screenings, hands-on group activities, and incredibly useful insights from experienced filmmakers! 🤠

Did we mention free pizzas? 🍕

🎬 HOW THE WORKSHOP WILL RUN

Our special guests Justin Villar and Jeremy Teh will screen a selection of their short films while you sit back and munch on pizza. This will include films that they made during their time at UMFC, as well as other films they have made afterwards as independent filmmakers! Following this, you will be treated to an in-depth behind-the-scenes look at what goes into the production of a short film; including the process of creating a shot list, storyboarding, previsualisation, rehearsal and how everything comes together in the final product!

You will have the opportunity to discuss your own queries or qualms about filmmaking with them and learn from their mistakes and pitfalls so you don't end up falling into the same traps! You will also be given the opportunity to partake in hands-on production planning activities on the night if you're planning on making your own films this year, and get feedback on the spot.

✨ OUR SPECIAL GUESTS

Justin Villar

Justin previously worked as a project manager and video editor for an agency whose main clients were Google and YouTube, before he moved into VFX for Film & TV. He’s worked across projects for Marvel, Warner Brothers, and was part of the on-set VFX team for NBCUniversal’s La Brea in 2022. Aside from directing sketches with upcoming comedians, he continues to work with musicians from the indie Melbourne scene. Currently, he trains and shoots videos with Melbourne-based stunt team Stunt City.

Jeremy Teh

From a Chinese-Australian lens, Jeremy enjoys creating work about the absurdity of being a minority, healing from religious trauma, and finding empathy for ourselves and others. He’s passionate about empowering creatives of diverse backgrounds to find their authentic voices, in a world where they have been made to feel undervalued and invisible. His eight-year-long filmography includes all kinds of shorts, music videos and web content, which have played in festivals from Canberra, Australia to Austin, Texas.
