Foley (Sound Effects) Workshop

What is Foley, and does it have anything to do with baby horses? The answers may surprise you! From the earliest radio plays to modern Hollywood productions and even live theatre; from the subtleties of a jacket rustling as someone walks, to the genre-defining hum of a Lightsaber. Foley is a crucial part of making the worlds we show to our audiences real, and even stretching them to the hyper-real. During this workshop, we’ll not only look at where Foley came from and how it can be used, but also get into the nitty-gritty of how to go about choosing sounds, recording those sounds, and editing them together to create the most effective Foley track – all with the tools around you.
About Connor Ross:
Connor Ross is a sound designer and composer who focuses on creating immersive auditory environments for theatre, screen, installations and sound art projects, utilising his experience in sound engineering and systems design to implement his work. Some of his recent theatrical credits have included work on: Lobby Hero at Fortyfivedownstairs (Dir. James Vinson, Around The Moon Productions, 2019); Lake Disappointment at Meat Market (Dir. Gavin Roach, Melbourne Fringe, 2019); My Wife Peggy at Gasworks Arts Park (Dir. Gavin Roach, Gasworks Premiere, 2019); We Were There at Chapel Off Chapel (Dir. Dirk Hoult, Tilted Projects, 2018); Macbeth at Southbank Theatre (Dir. Simon Phillips, Melbourne Theatre Company, 2017).
