UMSU Mentoring Network: Apply to be a 2016 director!


The UMSU Mentoring Network is a volunteer program run by the University of Melbourne Student Union, aimed at connecting students with their more experienced peers to support the best possible transition to university life.
The program will recruit mentors from within the student body, provide appropriate training, and link those mentors to students who request a mentor. The program is run by three UMSU appointed Student Directors.

UMSU is recognised by the University of Melbourne as the representative body for all students. It is responsible for a broad range of student representative, student engagement and student support activities. UMSU operates under the principles of Student Unionism which are broadly defined as student control of student affairs.

The program is seeking three student directors.

Applicants should have previous experience in university volunteering and be a current University of Melbourne Student. Previous experience in mentoring and/or team management would be valuable knowledge for the role.

The role commences in December 2015 and will run throughout 2016, with a significant time committment required between December 2015 – March 2016.

The Role

Successful candidates will be responsible for working in a team to plan, deliver and evaluate the Mentoring Network. This includes:

-Recruitment, interviewing and selection of mentors
-Promoting and advertising the program to the student body
-Arranging appropriate mentor training and creating supportive resources
-Appropriately matching mentors to mentees
-Organise Mentoring Network events throughout the semester
-Establishing and encouraging a supportive and friendly environment
-Administration duties, including managing mentor sign ups, responding to emails to -the account, timeline planning and logistics planning
-Monitoring expenditure and managing a budget
-Writing a report after the program and developing a strategic vision for the program into the future
-Ensure the smooth operation of the program, including leadership, swift response to unexpected logistical challenges
-Liaising with Student Union staff, mentors and mentees
-Adherence to relevant UMSU, MU Student Union Ltd and University policies, particularly in areas relating to Occupation Health & Safety, environment and volunteer management

The directors will be paid a small honoraria.

-Proficient computer skills (in particular, Microsoft Office and any other software directly applicable to the Mentoring Network)
