Sex and the Media: a discussion with Fiona Patten MLC and Dr Timothy Laurie

On Friday 25 September, come and discuss about SEX, EDUCATION, and POLITICS with Fiona Patten MLC and Dr. Timothy Laurie!

Fiona is the member of the Victorian Legislative Council for the Australian Sex Party. Fiona Patten is the founder and leader of the Australian Sex Party and member of the Victorian Parliament. Dr. Timothy Laurie is a lecturer in Screen and Cultural Studies at the University of Melbourne.

Ormond College at the University of Melbourne has recently decided to take a ‘strong stance’ on pornography, by condemning it as perpetuating a degrading attitude towards women, and as impoverishing understandings of sex in a ‘formative stage of life’. In this context, a discussion of sex in the media and its relationship to youth cultures and feminism is long overdue. Let’s talk about sex and ways to achieve progressive social change! Is prohibition ever the way forward? What contributions might education make to achieve progressive change?
