Do you love the ocean? Are you interested in your future career? Do you want to get the know your cohort a bit better? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you should join NEMO!
Networking for Ecological and Marine Opportunities (NEMO) is a club for anyone interested in marine science, ecology, biodiversity, networking opportunities and having fun. We aim to create a community with similar interests and the same love of the ocean and all its components.
Our events range from expert talks from within our university and networking with industry leaders, to snorkelling and having fun.
Club Aims:
Foster a Collaborative Community - One of our primary goals is to create an inclusive and vibrant community where students passionate about marine biology, the ocean, and Ecology can come together, share ideas, and collaborate. By providing a platform for students to connect, exchange knowledge, and discuss their common interests, we aim to cultivate an environment where students can feel supported and inspired to pursue their passion for marine science. Whether you're an undergraduate student or a master's candidate, NEMO will serve as a space for everyone to engage in meaningful interactions with their peers and faculty alike.
Provide Networking Opportunities with Experts - Through monthly events and guest speaker sessions, NEMO aims to bridge the gap between students and established professionals in marine biology, ecology, and related fields. By inviting professors, researchers, and industry leaders to share their experiences and insights, we provide students with invaluable networking opportunities to learn directly from those shaping the future of marine science and Ecology. These connections will help open doors for career opportunities, internships, and collaborative research initiatives.
Encourage Hands-On Learning and Field Experiences - We believe that some of the best learning happens outside the classroom, which is why NEMO is dedicated to organising field trips, snorkel and surf outings, and other hands-on experiences. These activities allow students to apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings while also building teamwork skills and fostering a deeper appreciation for marine ecosystems. From exploring local marine reserves to attending industry-related field trips, these experiences provide unique insights into marine science careers.
Promote Research Collaboration and Volunteer Opportunities - NEMO aims to be a platform for students to engage in meaningful research projects by connecting them with PhD students and faculty conducting cutting-edge marine biology research. Whether students are interested in volunteering as research assistants or participating in ongoing studies, our club provides the bridge to these opportunities. By encouraging collaboration between undergraduates and advanced researchers, NEMO helps foster the next generation of marine scientists and ecologists and ensures that students gain real-world experience and contribute to important ecological studies.
Support Career and Academic Development - Navigating the transition from undergraduate studies to graduate school or industry roles can be daunting. NEMO is committed to helping students explore various pathways in marine science, from graduate programs to diverse career roles in both academia and the private sector. Through workshops, panels, and one-on-one discussions, we aim to equip our members with the guidance and tools they need to make informed decisions about their future in marine biology, whether that involves pursuing a master's degree, finding a research assistantship, or stepping into a professional role.
