Established in 1876, we promote debating at the University in all its forms. We offer weekly training, coaching opportunities, and participation in tournaments both nationally and internationally!

The Melbourne University Debating Society, affectionately known as ‘MUDS’, is one of Australia’s oldest and most successful debating institutions, working to promote and encourage debating in all forms. Established in 1876, we are also the oldest student organisation in Victoria, pre-dating even the university’s Student Union.

MUDS organises internal competitions for our members throughout the year, providing opportunities for debaters of all skill levels in various debating styles. We run regular training sessions covering debating skills, but also general knowledge and topical world issues. In addition, we regularly compete at national and international tournaments, host public debates, provide coaching and school training opportunities, and of course, run plenty of social events!

Debating is a great way to learn, meet new people and challenge yourself. It's also incredibly marketable, with MUDS alumni often crediting job interview success to debating. Our alumni have achieved immense successes in their careers, and include former Chief Justices, leaders in the public and private sector, and even the Hon Julia Gillard!

We would love you to join us! We meet every Tuesday and Thursday of semester at 6:15pm in the Old Arts building. Find us on Facebook (Melbourne University Debating Society) or Instagram (@mudstergram) for more.
