University Network for Investing and Trading (UNIT)

From our inception in 2007, UNIT has become the largest investing and trading society in Australia. Our national network aims to connect all students to opportunities with peers, alumni and sponsors.

Who we are

Since its inception in 2007, the University Network for Investing and Trading (UNIT) has become the largest investing and trading society in Australia with 4,500 student members nationally. UNIT Chapters are located in four major Australian universities; the University of Sydney, the University of New South Wales, Macquarie University and the University of Melbourne. We strive to provide a practical financial toolkit for novices and more sophisticated members through educational seminars, professional opportunities with our sponsors and national competitions across all participating universities. Our major contributions towards member engagement for 2014 include the national Stock Pitch Challenge and the state-organised Women in Finance Evening. You most certainly need not be a finance major to join our club nor appreciate the breadth of our events.

Why join us

While there are many business and finance-related societies at each participating university, UNIT’s unique philosophy sets it apart.

UNIT gives members extensive exposure to the broad field of finance by hosting presentations from industry leaders including; investment banks, investment management firms, proprietary trading firms, commercial banks, stockbrokers, corporate advisors and hedge funds. UNIT endeavours to provide the financial education university classrooms cannot; how to open brokerage accounts, how to use excel shortcuts for financial modelling, how to screen for stocks and how to make sound financial decisions.

We share our knowledge for the sake of your understanding. We do not pretend to know the answers; we merely try to present options from which you can make your own informed financial decisions.

Club Aims:

  1. Increase awareness of different concepts within Personal Finance among the general student populace – specifically Investing, Trading, and other various topics associated with personal finance.
  2. Organize educational workshops to equip members with practical skills not learned in the classroom – such as financial modelling and company valuations, use of the Microsoft Suite, practical investing, and stock pitching.
  3. Inform members about current trends in the markets through a joint newsletter publication with the Macquarie University, University of Sydney, and University of New South Wales.
  4. Connect University of Melbourne members to like-minded peers in partner universities across Australia, in order to increase their network and sharing of information.
  5. Allow University of Melbourne members to apply their theoretical knowledge in a practical manner through investing competitions, and enrich the general university experience.
  6. Engage students from other faculties providing them general knowledge on personal finance and within that; investing and trading.
  7. Use our collective knowledge to improve access to knowledge relating to personal finances in communities to create a social benefit.
