Sri Lankan Graduates' Society


The Sri Lankan Graduates’ Society (SLGS) is a postgraduate society affiliated with the University of Melbourne Student Union (UMSU) and Graduate Student Association (GSA) at the University of Melbourne, Australia. We represent the Sri Lankan graduate student cohort of the University of Melbourne, providing advocacy and welfare services to uplift social and mental wellbeing of incoming and current students. We aim to build social and cultural bonds among the students by organizing cultural activities, sharing our Sri Lankan culture and heritage with the multicultural community at the University of Melbourne. While creating an awareness of Sri Lankan traditions and values, we also strive towards facilitating leadership development and encouraging student growth through enhancing their academic and professional life.

 

Club Aims:

  1. To integrate the authentic Sri Lankan culture and heritage with the multicultural community of the University of Melbourne by organising annual cultural events - such as New Year Celebrations, a Sri Lankan Musical Night, Vesak/Poson Celebrations, and a Dinner Dance - while also contributing to similar events organised by other student communities (e.g. Melbourne University Buddhist Studies).
  2. To ensure the social and mental wellbeing of Sri Lankan graduate students at the University of Melbourne by being the first point of contact in case of emergency, working with the university to provide needed assistance and organising timely events to support the members in need.
  3. To support the transition of incoming Sri Lankan graduate students at the University of Melbourne by organising welcome programs and assigning student mentors.
  4. To create awareness of graduate education opportunities available at the University of Melbourne by conducting seminars in collaboration with Sri Lankan universities and organising student outreach programs such as the SLGS scholarship initiative.
  5. To enhance the academic and professional life of Sri Lankan graduate students by working as an intermediary between students and national and international organisations such as the Consulate General of Sri Lanka.
