Märr-ŋamathirri to another week with Film Society! This Friday arvo, we’ll be watching an Australian historical docudrama from Arnhem Land: Ten Canoes!
When: 3:00pm, Friday April 4
Where: Interactive Cinema Space, Room 353, Arts West - North Wing (Building 148a)
Free: PIZZA and DRINKS before the film! 🍕🥤
Playfully directed and depicted by Peter Djigirr, Rolf de Heer, and the people of Ramingining amongst others, the film presents a tale within a tale narrated by David Gulpilil, the first being framed in black-and-white around Dayindi (Jamie Gulpilil), a young aboriginal warrior who wanders the wilderness hunting for magpie-goose eggs. Dayindi hears a colourful story told by his brother Minygululu (Peter Minygululu) which echoes his own situation: a man who lusts after his brother's wife, the character in the tale faces dire consequences, with the story's ending reverberating in Dayindi's own life.
The first feature film to have characters on screen speak entirely in Australian Aboriginal languages, this one includes indigenous dialects of the Yolŋu Matha language family (which we’ll accompany with subtitles as usual), and serves as a preservation of past practices as present practices. Inspired by a photograph of ten canoeists poling across the Arafura Swamp, to get the obvious out of the way as well: no, you don’t have to have watched One Canoe through Nine Canoes before this one, ha ha ha ha.
After the movie, we'll head to the pub for discussion and drinks. 🍻
