Winning Cuarón and his brother Carlos the award for Best Screenplay at the Venice Film Festival, and nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards as well, in this now classic of world cinema: the lives of Julio and Tenoch (played by real-life friends Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna), like those of teens everywhere, are ruled by raging hormones, intense friendships, and a headlong rush into adulthood. While living out a carefree cross-country escapade over the course of a summer with Luisa (Maribel Verdú), a gorgeous older woman they both fancy, the two besties also find connection with each other, themselves and the world around them.
Mirroring the teens' journey into adulthood, the film is set at the turn of the millennium, when Mexico's political reality was shifting into a new era también, and marked a (re)turning point in Cuarón's career after an initial stint in Hollywood. If you like last year's Challengers, you won't wanna miss it.
After the movie, we'll head to the pub for discussion and drinks.
