In this short but sweet film, a 12-year-old boy living in a remote medieval monastery under siege from Viking raids, Brendan, is beckoned to adventure when a celebrated master illuminator arrives with an ancient book brimming with secret wisdom and powers. A forest fairy named Aisling befriends and helps him on his quests.
Directed by Tomm Moore and Nora Twomey, the Academy Award-nominated, hand-drawn, Irish-French-Belgian co-production marked the first feature of the great Cartoon Saloon studio (imagine Studio Ghibli but Irish), taking some ten years to make, and was inspired by Celtic and medieval mythology, history and art, amongst other things.
