Hi everyone! UMSU International is happy to announce that the 2022 Co-Option is happening now!

What is Co-Option? 
Co-Option is one way for students to join the UMSU International family as a member of the committee. Applicants will be interviewed and selected by the current committee, who will evaluate each applicant based on the relevant skills and experiences that they have. So, it is highly recommended for you to apply for a position you feel you can excel in!

Role Description for Co-Opted Officer Applicants

 

Education Department

The UMSU International Co-Opted Education Officers shall: 

  1. Be members of the UMSU International Education sub-committee; UMSU International Regulations Ratified by Student Council 7th March 2017 Amendments passed on UMSU Intl EGM 14 April 2022 12 
  2. Assist the UMSU International Vice-President (Education and Welfare) and UMSU International Education Director on issues and activities related to the education and rights of Members;
  3. Assist in handling all general affairs of UMSU International; 
  4. Take up special assignments when so entrusted by the UMSU International Central Committee; and 
  5. Represent UMSU International in all places as advised by the UMSU International President and/or UMSU International Executive Committee.

*Recommended Skills:

  1. Be responsive in discussions.
  2. Able to allocate 4 to 6 hours a week for UMSU-related tasks.
  3. Confident in speaking to a public audience and has good communication skills.
  4. Responsible for allocated tasks.
  5. Willing to learn and receive constructive feedback.
  6. Preferably has experience in event planning and budgeting.

 

Welfare Department

UMSU International Co-Opted Welfare Officers shall: 

  1. Be members of the UMSU International Welfare sub-committee; 
  2. Assist the UMSU International Vice-President (Education and Welfare) and UMSU International Welfare Director on issues and activities related to the welfare, wellbeing, and rights of Members; 
  3. Assist in handling all general affairs of UMSU International; 
  4. Take up special assignments when so entrusted by the UMSU International Central Committee; and 
  5. Represent UMSU International in all places as advised by the UMSU International President and/or UMSU International Executive Committee.

*Recommended Skills:

  1. Applicants must show emotional intelligence/maturity, a sense of understanding, compassion, and empathy is essential.
  2. Be comforting, open-minded, kind, optimistic, and respectful.
  3. Some experience in project management/event planning and/or communications.
  4. Able to commit 6-8 hours weekly and be flexible/proactive with their time.
  5. Show sings of passion and intrinsic motivation (not just looking to boost their resume)
  6. Fast response time and ability to work well under pressure.
  7. Be able to deal with sensitive topics.
  8. Taking initiative and being conscientious about work, has a vision/goal they are working towards.
  9. Candidates must have a good understanding of the demographic of international students at Unimelb.
  10. Willingness to learn!

 

Cultural & Social Department

The UMSU International Cultural and Social Officers shall: 

  1. Be members of the UMSU International Cultural and Social subcommittee; 
  2. Assist the UMSU International Vice-President (Cultural and Social) and UMSU International Cultural and Social Director on issues and activities related to the cultural and social well-being of Members in the University; 
  3. Assist in handling all general affairs of UMSU International; and 
  4. Take up special assignments when so entrusted by the UMSU International Central Committee.

*Recommended Skills:

  1. The applicant is able to commit 8-10 hours per week and be able to work during break weeks leading to the start of the new semester.
  2. The applicant is able to deal with different situations in a professional manner. 
  3. The applicant can complete tasks on time, while maintaining a high level of standard.
  4. The applicant needs to be friendly and outgoing & respectful towards their peers.
  5. Having previous experience on event planning is preferred; however, one should be open-minded and adaptable towards opinions and criticisms from their peers.
  6. Being adaptable and prepared for unexpected situations.
  7. Highly organised individual with good time management.
  8. Confidence and self-assurance to perform well under high pressure, and be able to take a leadership role to make proactive decisions at any time.
  9. Being able to multi-task because there are times when we need to get done with some admin work, and sometimes on field work in a short time frame.
  10. Having interest in food management.

 

Media & Marketing Department

The UMSU International Media and Marketing shall:

  1. Be members of the UMSU International Media and Marketing subcommittee; 
  2. Assist the UMSU International Vice-President (Media and Marketing) and UMSU International Media and Marketing Director on issues and activities related to publicity of UMSU International; 
  3. Assist in handling all general affairs of UMSU International; and 
  4. Take up special assignments when so entrusted by the UMSU UMSU International Regulations Ratified by Student Council 7th March 2017 Amendments passed on UMSU Intl EGM 14 April 2022 14 International Central Committee.

*Recommended Skills:

  1. Dedicated Photographer with prepared portfolio for us to look at.
  2. Proficient in photo editing (i.e. Adobe Lightroom)
  3. Flexible time schedule to attend almost, if not all, events held by UMSUi to take photos (time commitment = 30 minutes per event)
  4. Able to lead and communicate with other ISA photographers as an OB.
  5. Respectful of people’s boundaries, culture, race, etc. 
  6. Preference: they have their own DSLR camera and additional camera equipment (i.e. tripod, lighting, SD card, gimbal, etc.) 
  7. Basic video editing skills are preferable.

 

Graduate Department

The UMSU International Graduate Officer shall:

  1. Be members of the UMSU International Graduate sub-committee; 
  2. Assist the UMSU International Graduate director and UMSU International Secretary on issues and activities related to the education, welfare, social status and rights of Graduate Student Members; UMSU International Regulations Ratified by Student Council 7th March 2017 Amendments passed on UMSU Intl EGM 14 April 2022 13 
  3. Assist in handling all general affairs of UMSU International; 
  4. Take up special assignments when so entrusted by the UMSU International Central Committee; and 
  5. Represent UMSU International in all places as advised by the UMSU International President and/or UMSU International Executive Committee; 
  6. Shall be a Graduate Student.

*Recommended Skills:

  1. Motivate to identify concerns of graduate students.
  2. Have time management skills (i.e. Clear weekly schedule)
  3. Be proactive in communication.
  4. Be calm and patient when facing difficulties.

 

Partnership & Sponsorship Department

The UMSU International Partnership and Sponsorship Officers shall: 

  1. Be members of the UMSU International Partnership and Sponsorship sub-committee; 
  2. Assist the UMSU International Partnership and Sponsorship Director in issues and activities related to liaison with both internal and external organisations relative to the University; 
  3. Assist in handling all general affairs of UMSU International; and 
  4. Take up special assignments when so entrusted by the UMSU International Central Committee.

*Recommended Skills:

  1. Be fluent in english.
  2. Commit a minimum of 5 hours per week.
  3. Are able to attend CCMs and departmental meetings.
  4. Ability to maintain expectations working in a team setting.
  5. Good time management skills.
  6. Is proactive and takes initiative in discussions.
  7. Some past experience in a similar role or work experience is preferable but not required.

 

Human Resources Department 

The UMSU International Human Resource Officers shall: 

  1. Be members of the UMSU International Human Resources subcommittee; 
  2. Assist the UMSU International Human Resources Director in affairs related to the International Student Ambassador (ISA) Program, and improving or maintaining relationships between members of UMSU International Central Committee; 
  3. Assist in handling all general affairs of UMSU International; and 
  4. Take up special assignments when so entrusted by the UMSU International Central Committee.

*Recommended Skills:

  1. Fluent English.
  2. Possess a certain level of knowledge in the ISA program and the organisation value.
  3. Approachable, bubbly and positive personality with the passion to talk to new people.
  4. Have great time management skills and agree to commit a minimum of 6 hours per week.
  5. Less commitment outside UMSU International is preferred.
  6. Able to make decisions without bias and treat everyone fairly.
  7. Motivated and open-minded on receiving and executing new tasks.
  8. Willing to enhance the relationship between committee members and ISAs.

 

*Recommended Skills are not compulsory, however, could be helpful for a smooth transition and sustainability for the role.
