The St Kilda Festival, showcasing Australian artists, returns tomorrow, on the 9th of February for its 40th anniversary with over 60 acts, including special guests ICEHOUSE, Kylie Auldist and DJ Hot Dub Time Machine.

Australian rock group ICEHOUSE performed at the first St Kilda Festival in 1980 and went on to become “one of the most successful Australian bands of the eighties and nineties”, according to the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). On Sunday they will be reprising the music of the debut album that launched their successful career.

“It’s really special that ICEHOUSE are coming back to do it again,” said Festival publicist Jasmin Hyde. “But I think the cool thing is that [the Festival] hasn’t changed too much over the years.”

The free annual festival on St Kilda’s foreshore has showcased Australian artists since its inception and has become one of the biggest community events in Australia.

The festival’s New Music Stage will feature ten emerging artists competing for a $5000 prize and a place on next year’s Main Stage.

Event organisers have emphasised that families can also enjoy a great day out. Encouraging guests to wear eighties-themed clothing to celebrate the festival, alongside workshops, face painting, market and stalls – there’s something for everyone.

“It’s great to see the community come together for a fun day out, “said Mayor of Port Phillip Bernadene Voss. “We’re proud to put the spotlight on our city with such a well-loved and iconic free event that offers something for all ages.”

Fitzroy and Acland Streets will also join in the celebrations, with restaurants, cafes and bars hosting special events and offers. Over 100 food trucks will be situated across the festival.

Organisers are expecting to attract about 400,000 visitors, similar to previous years. Check out the St Kilda Festival’s main stage lineup at their website.
