New Bodies

A decade ago, we discovered how to replace the human body with an enhanced alternative. This generation-defining feat, a magnificent culmination of robotics and bioengineering, launched humanity beyond the revolting organic. It solved cancer, for one. It eliminated illness, ageing and injury. Life expectancy is measured in centuries. The human organism is a highly inefficient

machine—it rots quickly, grows imprecisely. But then we realised we can directly substitute every organic piece of this machine with a synthetic counterpart. This new, artificial body is structurally perfect. It has unyielding edges. It is exponentially more powerful than the muscles we previously relied on for motion. Human limits no longer exist, only technological roadblocks. There was some resistance, of course. Religious folk accused us of playing God, and we’ll admit that the new human is not a natural thing—there’s certainly no God in the coldness of its calculated angles, the sterile glint of its skin. Others cried about reproduction, and they’re right in a sense; immortality doesn’t lend itself to offspring—though now we don’t need offspring. The poets had a word to say too: What would they write about now that bodies were gone? This is of little concern to us. Although, a decade on, we’re still rectifying some minor anomalies. Users often complain that hugging doesn’t feel the same, that there’s no longer the soft reciprocity of two imperfect halves melting into unity. We hope our new, state-of-the-art metal alloy edifice will solve this, but we consider it a negligible inexactitude.
