Held Together by a Half-Thought returns in 2026. This conversation series, presented by George Paton Gallery and hosted by the VCA, invites applications from current VCA Honours students. This program pairs a current student with an established peer for a 45-minute conversation, not a formal interview or artist talk, but more like a generous cross-examination. The format prioritises shared inquiry, unfinished ideas, and unfolding dialogue and will take place in the Octagon.

In 2026, two successful applicants will each be paired with an external practitioner.  The successful applicants will receive a $200 honorarium, and support from GPG staff to prepare for the conversation.

EOIS Due:
Thursday 4 June, midnight

Presentation Date:
Wednesday 14 August

FAQs

Who is this for?
Current BFA Honours students!

Who am I in conversation with?
We love suggestions, and there is room for this in the application. Is there anyone whose practice really resonates with your own? A curator you really like? An artist who presents an interesting overlap or divergence with things that you're exploring? Our hope is to pair you with the person you'd most like to talk to, but we are also here to help connect you to the right person.

Do I have to prepare a speech?
Not a formal speech, but probably some questions and notes, and you'll likely want to arrange a chat with your co-conspirator.

Is it a public event?
This will be with your peers, your teachers, and some visiting students from the Parkville campus. A relaxed and friendly environment!

The application form doesn't work for my requirements.
No problem, if you need to submit it in audio, or video, or through an in person chat just reach out to Programs Officer Chantelle Mitchell (chantelle.mitchell@union.unimelb.edu.au).

My question isn't answered here.

Email chantelle.mitchell@union.unimelb.edu.au with any questions!
