Dance Democracy

What does dance democracy mean? It means everybody can get involved!

Dance Democracy is a two-week program of fun and dancing. Choreograph new works, perform for an audience, or just come in for a night of dancing and dance battle. Whether you’re a pro dancer or have two left feet, you’ll enjoy our two-week program of offerings in the Guild Theatre 31 March – 12 April.

Week 1:

Two nights of student dance celebrating our passion to move. Welcoming students from all dance

styles and genres.

Scratch night - 2nd April 6:30pm, Guild Theatre - Register Now

Throw your name in the hat and get up and perform any style! A bit like an open mic night, Scratch Night gives you the chance to share a short dance piece with an audience. You can perform solo, with a friend, or in a small group.This is an opportunity to just get up and dance without any costumes or props. The best part is you don't need any previous experience - dance is for everyone!

Cypher Camp - 4th April 5:00pm, Guild Theatre - Register Now

Led by legendary Melbourne street dance group Cypher Culture, Dance Democracy: Cypher Camp will be a night of fun and freestyle dance. In this foundational workshop, you’ll learn from renowned hip-hop, krump, and contemporary dance artist David Prakash, as he teaches you the basics of street dance, cypher circles, and freestyling, before ending the night with a dance battle.

Week 2:

Dance Democracy: Small Works - 9th+10th April 6:30pm, Guild Theatre - Book Now

A two-night season dedicated to emerging choreographers across the uni. Led and devised by student choreographers this week provides space for new dance makers from all styles to showcase their passion and talent for dance.

Dance Democracy: 30th March midnight - 12th April 11pm; Guild Theatre, Level 2 Arts and Cultural Building (Building 159), Parkville campus; Dance Democracy is a two-week program of fun and dancing. Choreograph new works, perform for an audience, or just come in for a night of dancing and dance battle. Whether you’re a pro dancer or have two left feet, Dance Democracy is for everyone!

Dance Democracy: Scratch Night: 2nd April 6:30pm - 8pm; Guild Theatre, Level 2 Arts and Cultural Building (Building 159), Parkville campus; Throw your name in the hat and get up and perform any style! Show us a short dance you’ve been working on, improv to some music, or grab a friend and show us your best moves!

Dance Democracy: Cypher Camp: 4th April 5pm - 7pm; Be guided by Cypher Culture’s Geoffrey Lim on how to battle it out in dance. Part dance workshop, part battle, learn new skills and techniques from the experts. Open to everyone!
