The University of Melbourne Student Union (UMSU), and its predecessor organisations, have maintained a 130-year tradition of students standing up for human rights issues, including those relating to international affairs. This is consistent with the mission and values of UMSU.

In recent times, this has included a motion in relation to events in Palestine.

We have since rescinded this motion acknowledging the need to ensure that motions are robust, passed with due diligence and supported by appropriate consultation.

Against this backdrop, UMSU has engaged Michelson Alexander to consult with relevant stakeholders, including relevant pro-Palestinian and Jewish bodies on campus, to help equip Students' Council to respond to any future potential motions on this matter.

Information about this consultation can be found HERE.

(Note: You must log into the UMSU website using your normal UniMelb credentials in order to access this page. If you are not a member, you must join UMSU as a member to access this page.)

UMSU continues to encourage respectful debate of international affairs on campus and deplores and denounces bigotry and hate speech in all its forms.
