Divest Petition

As your Student Union, UMSU is taking a stand against the University of Melbourne's involvement in weapons manufacturing research and development. We know that the uni has investments and partnerships in the weapons industry, which goes against the values many of us hold dear.

We're 100% committed to making your voices heard where it counts.

We've launched a petition to urge the University Council to divest from weapons manufacturing and terminate all related programs and projects. This petition aligns with UMSU's long-standing opposition to militarism and human rights abuses. By signing, you're joining a collective effort to ensure the uni's investments reflect our community's ethics.

Together, we can push for change and hold our institution accountable. Join students, alumni, parents, and the broader community in calling for UniMelb to divest from weapons research and development.

Why This Matters

UniMelb didn't become Australia's leading institution by chance. For years, they’ve set the standard for excellence in education, research, and ethical leadership. However, recent investments in weapons manufacturers have raised concerns about our alignment with these core values.

We believe it's time for UniMelb to reconsider these investments and refocus on areas that reflect our shared commitment to peace, education, and ethical responsibility. As a top-ranked university, they have the opportunity and the obligation to lead by example.

What makes this petition any different to the rest?

This isn't just another call for change – it's a petition with real power behind it. Under the University of Melbourne Council's Regulation section 19(3), the Council is required to address petitions from recognised student organisations.

This means our collective voice demanding divestment from weapons research and manufacturing must be heard and responded to. It's a unique opportunity to effect meaningful change in how our university invests its resources.

By supporting this petition, you're not just expressing an opinion – you're participating in a process that can shape UniMelb's future and reaffirm our commitment to positive global impact.

For Students

Your UniMelb experience isn't just about classes and exams – it's about shaping the future you want to see. So you've got every right to speak up about how that money is used. Let's make sure it goes towards building the kind of world you believe in.

For Alumni

Remember your UniMelb days? Whether you were dozing off on a Rowdy bean bag or deep in thought under the cloisters, you were part of something special. A place where education and positive change went hand in hand.

Today's students deserve that same inspiring experience. But right now, some university investments don't align with the values we hold dear.

Let's help steer UniMelb back to its roots. By supporting divestment from harmful industries, we can ensure the university continues to be a force for good. After all, isn't that the UniMelb we know and love?

For Parents and guardians

We know you want the best for your kids – a great education and a bright future. But it's not just about grades, right? It's about values too.

Some of UniMelb's investments don't quite match the future we want for our young people. We're talking about ties to weapons manufacturing – not exactly what we pictured when dreaming of our kids' futures!

By backing our divestment campaign, you're helping shape a uni that's as ethical as it is excellent. It's about creating a better UniMelb and a better world for your kids to step into.

For our neighbours

Whether you're grabbing coffee on campus or living just down the street, you're part of the UniMelb family. Our university doesn't just shape students – it shapes our entire community.

Right now, UniMelb has some investments that don't quite fit with our neighborhood values. We're talking about connections to weapons manufacturing. Not exactly what you'd expect from the institution at the heart of our vibrant community, right?

By supporting our divestment campaign, you're helping steer UniMelb towards choices that benefit us all. It's about creating a university that truly reflects the caring, forward-thinking spirit of our area. After all, a better UniMelb means a better community for everyone.
