Dear University of Melbourne Privacy Office,

I am writing to express my deep and urgent concerns regarding the recent changes introduced to the UniWireless Terms of Use.

As a student, I am concerned that the amended UniWireless terms of use is an overreach and potentially invades my privacy. To access UniWireless which is essential for studying on campus, we are being asked to agree to conditions that I believe constitute an unjustified breach of privacy and a threat to freedom of expression.

I am particularly concerned that these terms could be used to monitor or target students engaged in peaceful protest or activism. Given recent events regarding changes to the protest rules.

This is an unacceptable erosion of our rights and sets a dangerous precedent. I urge the Privacy Office to provide clarity on the following:

  1. What data is collected when students use UniWireless under these new terms?

  1. Who has access to this data, and under what circumstances can it be shared?

  1. How does the University ensure this data is not used to monitor or penalise students involved in legitimate protest?

  1. What are students’ options if they do not wish to agree to these terms but still need internet access to study?

Students should not have to choose between their right to privacy and their right to education.
I request that this matter be urgently reviewed, and that students are provided with a transparent explanation of how their data is used, stored, and protected.

Regards,
A concerned student.
