Want to gain experience in event assistance, community building and marketing? Are you part of the street dance community and interested in a PAID student opportunity? 

We're seeking a Student Lead for Dance Battle 2026. This is a renumerated opportunity over April 2026. You’ll be a University of Melbourne student involved with the street dance community, and keen to assist with the rollout of Dance Battle 2026. You’ll learn valuable and employable event, marketing and arts administration skills.

About Dance Battle: 

Union House Theatre and Cypher Culture collaborate to deliver a street dance battle on International Dance Day (Wednesday 29 April 2026) at the University of Melbourne Student Union.  

Cypher Culture promotes street dance through exciting projects, workshops and performances.  

Union House Theatre are the hub of extracurricular performance activities on campus providing students with opportunities to grow and be creative.  

We’re hosting an open freestyle Dance Battle held in public space at the University of Melbourne to showcase the vibrancy of the street dance community on campus. The battle will be held in the Amphitheatre, in the Student Precinct.  

The process seeks to collaboratewith many of the dance clubs connected to Union House Theatre — the result will be an awesome, fun event, a dance competition with judges and performances showcasing dance at Uni. In the lead up there’s a program of three street dance workshops with guest teachers.  
 

Time Commitment:  

Approximately 45-50 hours over 5 weeks from 31 March to 29 April.  

The following gives you a sense of how the hours may be spread across the project. They are approximate only:  

  • Attendance at meetings (5 hours)  
  • Support with administration and promotion e.g. emailing, social media posting, , distributing flyers and posters, ticketing (15 hours)  
  • Content creation (6 hours)  
  • Attendance and support with Street Dance workshops: April dates TBC (9 hours)  
  • Attendance at the Dance Battle, Wednesday 29 April (6 hours)  
  • Additional tasks as required (5 hours) 
     

Important 2026 Dates:  

EOI Student Lead opens: Tuesday 17 March 
EOI Student Lead close: Monday 23 March, midday 
Student notified: Wednesday 25 March - Friday 26 March 
Project commences: From Tuesday 31 March 
Street Dance workshops: April dates TBC (likely afternoons 15, 16 and 22 April)
Dance Battle: Wednesday 29 April  

Meetings and other work can be organised in accordance with student’s schedule and availability. 
 

Location:  
Arts and Cultural Building, Bldg 159 University of Melbourne Parkville Campus. 
 

About You:  
Union House Theatre and Cypher Culture are seeking Expressions of Interest for a Student Lead to help support community engagement in the lead up to the event. To apply for this opportunity, you will:  

  • have knowledge of dance on campus, particularly street dance culture  
  • are a member of a dance group at the University of Melbourne Student Union  
  • are passionate about street dance and promoting street dance culture to uni students  
  • have good organisational skills 
  • are super keen about this event and connecting students to the Dance Battle  
  • have skills in marketing, content creation and/or community building, or you're keen to learn these skills 
     

Renumeration:  
There is an honorarium of $1,850 for your involvement in this project.

  • knowledge of dance on campus, particularly street dance culture  
  • membership of a dance group at the University of Melbourne Student Union  
  • demonstrated passion for street dance  
  • keenness to promote street dance culture to uni students  
  • organisational skills 
  • experience or a willingness to learn marketing and social media content creation skills
