Student Producer: Tastings Theatre Program
Want to gain experience in theatre producing, performing arts programming, artist liaison and production? Are you a University of Melbourne student interested in a PAID opportunity?
We're seeking a Producer for Tastings 2026 – a bite size program of theatre and live performance bought to you by UMSU’s Creative Arts and Union House Theatre. This is a part time, renumerated opportunity over May - August 2026. You’ll be a University of Melbourne student with a strong interest in theatre on campus, and keen to help with the rollout of the Tastings program in the Guild Theatre, August 2026. About Tastings:
Tastings is a showcase of original short works in the Guild Theatre, in Week Four of Semester Two of 2026.
A biennial event, Tastings celebrates student creativity across all forms of theatre and performance. Hosted by the UMSU Creative Arts Department with support from Union House Theatre, Tastings provides a place for students to develop and test new, bite size performance ideas in a supportive environment with like-minded peers.
Time Commitment:
Hours vary over a three-month period. Initially you’ll only be required 2-3 hours a week, with time commitment building as the season approaches. Some work may be required over the mid-sem break. A majority of hours will be used during the pre-event lead up and the performance week.
The following gives you a sense of tasks for the project:
- Attendance at meetings
- Support with administration and promotion e.g. emailing, social media posting, ticketing
- Hosting technical meetings and production meetings with artists
- Creating schedules
- Support with marketing
- Support with grants and arranging mentorships
- Attendance at the production rehearsals and performance week
- Additional tasks as required
Important 2026 Dates:
- EOI Student Producer open: Monday 27 April
- EOI Student Producer close: Tuesday 5 May, midday
- Student notified: Wednesday Monday 11 May – Wed 13 May
- Project commences: From Thursday 14 May
- Tastings production week and performances: Week 4, August 17 - 22
- Meetings and other work can be organised in accordance with student’s schedule and availability.
Location:
Arts and Cultural Building, Bldg 159 University of Melbourne Parkville Campus.
About You:
Creative Arts and Union House Theatre are seeking Expressions of Interest for a Student Producer to help support the Tastings program in the lead up to the event.
To apply for this opportunity, you ideally will:
- Have knowledge of theatre and performance groups on campus
- Are passionate about the development of new ideas and platforms that allow students to test their creativity
- Have good organisational skills
- Are super keen about this event and connecting students to the arts on campus
- Have skills in organisation, arts, and community building, or you're keen to learn these skills
Renumeration:
There is an honorarium of $2000 for your involvement in this project.
How to Apply:
Please note you will be asked to provide a one-page CV with relevant experience.
You will also need to write a short (250-word max) paragraph that addresses how you meet these criteria:
- Knowledge of student creativity on campus, particularly live performance and theatre
- membership or connection with a theatre or dance group at the University of Melbourne Student Union
- Demonstrated passion for live performance
- Keenness to help promote platforms for developing artists' organisational skills
- Experience or a willingness to learn marketing and very simple budgeting skills
