The third edition of the Racism at Unimelb report was written based on a survey ran between the 11th of August and 24th of September to give students a chance to voice their experiences of racism on campus, as well as gather students general attitudes towards the reccomendations put forth by the 2021 and 2022 reports.
The 2021 & 2022 report came with 11 reccomendations directed to the University of Melbourne and 4 to UMSU based on students' experiences. However, based on focus group feedback and this years repsonses, the reccomendations to the University of Melbourne have expanded to 14. Since the publication of the first report the university has noted the report but has not taken any substantial steps towards implementing any reccomendations that we know of.
This is the third year this report has been written, and yet, we await the university to implement intiatives to combat racism for students immediately, not over long term strategies. While some reccomendations are long term, others are relatively simpler to implement and can make a massive difference in the ability of BIPOC students to access education at the university.
UMSU is in the process of implementing all reccomendations and adopting an Anti-racism policy for the union after the competion of a D&I Audit in september this year.

This report was written based on a survey run between 26th of October to 2nd of November which informed the People of Colour department of the areas that students are affected in the most and the stories behind each experience. This report is written to center and focus on students’ stories rather than statistics or numbers, and this is how the report should be interpreted.
Please take care when reading this report as it has some disturbing stories. it’s quite painful to read the report knowing this is what students go through and the impact it has on BIPOC students and their access to education.
There are 11 recommendations made to the university which should be areas that the 2030 anti-racism action plans should focus on, there are several recommendations made to UMSU in the way they operate and how to improve on their operational functions. I hope that future officers will be able to work on the implementation of these recommendations and conduct a survey in future years.
This report was accepted by Student’s council on 19/11/2021 and adopted by the People of Colour Committee on 22/11/2021, minutes of both meetings are available on the UMSU website
